Hi, I am writing an email to my previous professor. At the beginning, I want to say "it has been quite a while we haven't contacted each other". Is this a good sentence? Many thanks for any input.

You should say, 'It has been quite a while that we haven't contacted each other.'

You can also say:
'We haven't contacted each other for quite a while.'
'It has been quite a while since we last contacted each other.'

"quite" is optional in the three sentences but if it has been more than a while, you can say 'quite a while'.

Hi 2006: thank you so much for the help. You have made it very clear. One more question: how about if I want to emphasize the meaning that the fault is on my side for not contacting the other person. Can I say "I apologize for not having contacted you for a while". Many thanks!

You're welcome.
Yes you can; it's a good sentence. However, you asked me a question, so your question to me should have a question mark at the end, not a period.

More natural: It has been a while since we were last in touch.
