    Default Bald

In "a bald shot across the bow", the word "bald" means not hidden, easy to be noticed? Am I right? Thanks.

It could do. But is this perhaps a typo for "bold"? Can you give more context?

Here is a larger context. I indirectly asked the author of the piece about the typo of bold, but was told that there is no typo. What do you think?

"a dramatic underestimation of international reactions
and a corresponding breakdown in interagency coordination, a clumsy attempt to prod the United States to support treaty negotiations ongoing in Geneva for the Prevention of an Arms Race in Outer Space (PAROS),34 or a bald ‘‘shot across the bow’’ announcing China’s intentions to challenge America’s space dominance."

Let me take advantage of this message to add one more question below. What does the verb "field" mean in the following sentence?
"Of the major and emerging powers, China has the greatest potential to compete Militarily with the United States and field disruptive military technologies that could over time offset traditional U.S. military advantages."

Ah! Full context makes all the difference! The quotation marks make all clear.

The "shot across the bows" is unequivocal - it is plain and clear.

Your second question about "to field" - this comes from the game of cricket (and baseball), where fielders are placed around the pitch to try and catch the ball hit by the batsman. Therefore in this context the suggestion is that China will be able to put in place military technologies that will cause major problems to the US.

Anglika, Thanks a million. The first question is not that hard, as when you use common sense, you figure out. But when it comes to sports that we Chinese don't play, boy, that is hard. I basically have no idea how the game is played. Talking about cultural difference! Thanks again.
