    Agreement

    Dear teachers,
    Please read the following sentences:

    No.1
Non-verbal communication, gestures, body language, facial expressions all convey a message. I think the subject should be "Non-verbal communication, gestures, body language, facial expressions " so the verb should be plaural. But strangely enough when I typed 'convey' the Microsoft Word showed it is wrong. When I typed 'conveys' then it showed it is right. So could you please tell me if I am wrong?

    No.2
The important point to note is that no one approach is better than another.
Could you please tell me if there is anything wrong with the sentence? When I typed it the Microsoft Word showed 'approach' is wrong. When I typed it "The important point to note is that no approach is better than another." then it showed it correct. Could you please explain what is wrong with my sentence?

Looking forward to hearing from you.
    Thank you in advance.

    Jiang

As for the first issue, everything's fine with the verb 'convey' used in the plural - the pronoun 'all' refers to the whole noun phrase 'Non-verbal communication, gestures, body language, facial expressions'; the word processor seems to take 'all' as the only subject of the sentence, which is correct to use the verb in the singular (with '-s' at the end) with it.

As for the second issue, you can't use 'one' between 'no' and the noun 'approach'. The determiner 'no' is sufficient there.

    Dear engee30,

Thank you very much for your explanation.
    Now I understand No.1.
I still feel confused by No.2. I found the example "No one man can lift it" in my dictionary so I think my sentence is the same with that in the dictionary. Could you please explain the difference between my sentence and the one in the dictionary?

Looking forward to hearing from you.
    Thank you in advance.

    Re: Agreement

It is acceptable to say "no one thing" - it is emphasising the singularity of the thing. An alternative word would be "single": "No single approach"

    Re: Agreement

    Dear Anglika,

Thank you very much for your explanation. Do you mean my original sentence "The important point to note is that no one approach is better than another" is correct? Could you please explain why microsoft word indicated my sentence was wrong?

Looking forward to hearing from you.
    Thank you in advance.

    That's really interesting - I didn't know that. Thanks.

I'm afraid I can't think of any good explanation for that now.

    Re: Agreement

Sadly, spellchecks and grammar checks are not fully conversant with subtleties in English. You cannot rely on them for everything.

It's too bad that spellchcks are not fully conversantwith subtleties. Sometimes I depend totally on spellchecks.

    Dear Cas,
Thank you very much for your attention.
I think my question was answered. What Anglika said, if I am right, is that spellingcheck sometimes make mistakes. And my original sentences are correct.
