    not (the) same

Besides and also are very similar, if not (the) same, in meaning. It wouldn't be necessary to use both in the same sentence.

    Is 'the' required?

    Many thanks.

It is required in written English, but it isn't so as far as informal English is concerned.

Hum... Even in ''informal'' English, ''the'' required. I wouldn't say it without...

    I meant informal spoken English.

Let's meet again next week, same place, same time, OK?

Okay, I wouldn't say even that sentence like that. Sorry!

The same goes for me, I mean I wouldn't either, but people in my work sometimes use such utterances.

Yes, "the" is required here. It would be totally ungrammatical to omit it.

adjective 1 (the same) exactly alike; not different or changed

It's really unusual and ungrammatical to use same without the! But please have a look at my source of information I made use of:

It is very unusual to use same without 'the'. The only occasions I can think of are the 'same time, same place' mentioned in your source, or saying 'same again?' in a bar when you are buying the drinks.

In kohyoongliat's sentence, 'the' is definitely required.

The most worrying thing about this sentence is the meaning! Beside and also are not the same, and can be used in the same sentence.

"Besides three dogs, he also had two cats."
