    I've read in English usage books that 'same' as used above be replaced by 'it'.

    OK. If that's not problem, then what about this? The same and indentical are synonyms. Could you be associating the two semantically, and the reason you feel the might not be required?

    If not identical, ...
    If not the same, ...

    The main point of that post was to stress that I, personally, would not say that, and that that is my personal opinion.

    What that tends to mean is that you think the sentence in question is ungrammatical. Next time, you might want to be a tad more clear on what you mean. Think about your audience.
