    After Pranab Mukherjee held parleys with UPA allies, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has joined the campaign and has played the consensus card straight on - The UPA-Left nominee should get the support of everybody, irrespective of party affiliation.

    Please explain the highlighed ones.

    played the consensus card straight [on is unnecessary and should be omitted] - a metaphor from playing card games. He has has been open about the consensus.

    The UPA-Left nominee = the nominated candidate for the UPA-Left [Party]

    party affiliation = being affiliated to (connected to/having allegiance to) a political party.
