    Default Meaning

    I was reading an essay written by Sir Neville Cardus on a cricket player William Gilbert Grace. I could not understand the words in bold letters. Can somebody help telling me the meaning of it, which is in bold.


    1) Grace was a comanding figure. His word was law. Even the umpire used to change his decision after W.G.'s intervention. Once a friend of W.G. was declared out by the umpire. Grace shouted from the pavilion, "Shan't have it; can't have it; and won't have it."He was as powerful as Dr. Samuel Johnson was.

    2) Is word "em" is the synonym of "them" ? eg. Catch' em young and watch' em young.

    3) He sworn in as Chief Minister of ...........
    Can somebody tell me the meaning of "as" here ?
