    Default What Is Correct?

    Hallo,

    Should I say:

"He suggests that the visit take place on Monday" or
"He suggests that the visit takes place on Monday"?

    or

"I request that an extension be granted" or
"I request that an extension is granted"?

Which verb form is required? Can you give me a grammar reference for this?

    Thanks a lot.

    Hallo hela!

I hope you speak German, I assumed that from you saying "Hallo" instead of "Hello"... Anyway, I'll just try and hope you do understand German:

Falls Sie suggest im Sinne von "vorschlagen" benutzen wollen, sollten Sie keinen "that"-Satz anschließen, sondern ein gerund folgen lassen.
    [to suggest doing s.th.]
He suggests visiting them/her/him on Monday or He suggests making the visit on Monday (wenn es sich um den Besuch eines Gebäudes o.Ä. handelt)

Request hat genauso eine feste Form: [to request for s.th.], kann aber auch mit that benutzt werden:
I request that an extension be granted. Ist okay. oder BrE: I request that an extension should be granted. Schöner klingt meiner Meinung nach: I (kindly) request for an extension (to finish doing s.th.)

    Hoffe, das hat geholfen :)

    Hi hela,
All sentences are correct. In the firs two sentences.
The first sentences are in SUBJUNCTIVE MOOD. Take a good grammar book and refer "subjunctives", and you'll get the answer. As regards usage, I believe Amaricans prefer subjunctives.

    In fact what you have written can be put in 3 ways;
-He suggests that the visit take place on Monday.
-He suggests that the visit takes place on Monday.
-He suggests that the visit should take place on Monday. (British English)

The same explanation applies to the second set of sentences too, except it is PASSIVE.

    Cheers
    Udara
