    Similar words, similar meaning?

I'm not sure when to use "relation" and "relationship". The last time I hesitated was when writing the following paragraph: "The results of the experiment suggest a close relation between the room temperature and the number of dead mice".

    Use "relationship" in this case.

    Thank you.

So, using "relation" in this case would be wrong. If it can be explained with clear-cut examples I'd appreciate it.

    'relation' - as in:

in relation to - in/with regard to, vis-a-vis

Thought is freedom in relation to what one does.

These should be assessed in relation to their meeting the goals.

relationship - the condition of being related (to smth/smb)

...the relationship between matter and life.
    ...living in a healthy/loving relationship...
