    man or men???

    ALL _________AIR.

    A.MAN NEEDS
    B.MEN NEED
    C.MAN NEED

    A,B OR C?

    I've looked up some dictionaries, and I think it should be A.

    But my teacher insists B is the correct answer.

    Thanks for your comments.

    Your teacher is right.
    Now comes the main part of your thread: opinions as to why!

    I googled a bit, and I think there is some possibility to be C.

    Could you tell me the grammar of the simple word "man"?

    Thank you very much!

    Re: man or men???

    All men need air.
    Every man needs air.

    (A) man needs air
    All men need air

    man --> singular
    men --> plural
    Hope this helps

    'all' : refers to the whole quantity or extent of a particular group.
    'man' is singular, an individual person (so, not 'a group'). 'men' is a group, part of all humankind.

    Re: man or men???

    Okman, you can now tell your teacher why it should be:
    All men need air.
    All men need water.
    All men need food.
    All men need sleep.

    "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal"

    I wonder if any of the Americans will recognise the reference.

    'man' is singular, an individual person (so, not 'a group'). 'men' is a group, part of all humankind.
    "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them."
    Genesis 1:27 (King James Version)

    That is, of course, from the Declaration of Independence.

    In this case man is a plural noun since it stands for all men. In fact, you could say it is short for mankind. (If you prefer you could say it stands for humankind.)
