    Default scratch

    He said if the guy was up and up he would have had Artie write
    the word down in there. Howard said he was going to scratch the idea of
    him giving out the word.

    It means he is going to forget about that idea, or not go ahead with it.

    The term "scratch" in this context comes from horse racing; when a horse that was originally in the line-up for a particular race is unable to compete at the last minute, bettors are told to "scratch" him from their racing forms, that is, cross off his name.
