    lst name between parentheses

    Hi,

I would like to know why a name would appear between parentheses like the fictional name Mary ( Johnson ) Johnson-Smith ?

    thanks

    Re: lst name between parentheses

Presented that way, the name in parentheses is usally the woman's maiden name.

    Re: lst name between parentheses

It means that when she got married, she took her husband's surname. Her mainden name is mentioned in parentheses because there may be some people who aren't familiar with her married name.

thank you! one more question. Could it be possible if the person was married and is divorcing to use her maiden naame in parentheses to aknowledge people of the changing in her status?

    Re: lst name between parentheses

Everything is possible, but the explanation by Ouisch is far and away the most common one.

In my university alumni magazine, there is a section on what people are doing. That's how they list it: Barbara (Davis) Smith writes that she, Mary (Johnson) Anderson, and Alice Black enjoyed a weekend together, catching up and discussing their plans to start a new company. Alice didn't change her name - whether she got married or not.
