    Default good name

    Hi there :
    I've just called a company and the customer care officer there asked what my "good name" was. Was he refering to my first name? Please help.

    Perhaps you had complained that they had damaged your reputation (that's what 'good name' means). Or perhaps they thought you had complained.

    Or they could just be being overly polite. It is a collocation that can be found in BrE, but it is generally regarded as not particularly acceptable, and in fact rather laughable.

    You are misunderstanding me.

    "Please give me your good name" is on a par with "Your wife and your good self" as a collocation. It is not highly regarded and generally is seen as pompous.

    Context is all.

    Oh! Anglika I understand what you mean. I should have just clicked the wrong quote button here. The proverb agrees with the definition of BobK that a "good name" means reputation.
