    come down on someone's side

    I came down on the side of my mother when she fights with my father.

    I came down on the mother's side when she fights with my father.


    Which one of these sentences is correct?

    Actually neither is right since your verbs don't agree. Either you need to change "came" to "come" OR "fights" to "fought".

    Having made that small correction that your second example is in more common usage.

    Sorry - in your second example you also need to change "the" to "my"
