    Smile meaning

    Hello
What's the meaning of underlined expression?
Smith rode back and forth across the field behind the Texans waving his axe to let them know that the bridge was destroyed.

He rode across the field in one direction first, then in the other. The whole time he was doing this, he was behind a group of Texans, and he was waving his ax in order to signal to them that the bridge had been destroyed.
