    Re: what is the difference?

    hey

well, I am not quite sure but I guess that when you use " THE " you mean a specific cow but when you use " A " ,you are talking about cow in general and don't mean any specific one.

I hope that there is another one can help you to make my point clear for i am still biggerner in studying English

    Re: what is the difference?

The cow is a domestic animal.
This sentence could have two meanings :
    (1) you are talking about one cow and that cow is a domestic animal.
    (2) All types of cow, or varieties of cow in the world are domestic animals.
A cow is a domestic animal.
This sentence has only one meaning :
    (1) Any single cow in the world is a domestic animal.

Note : I am too a beginner. I just told you what I know.

    Re: what is the difference?

It comes down to specific and non-specific.

The cow - a particular cow you are discussing OR the specific species bos bovis

A cow - an example of the species bos bovis.
