    Default Open vs Opened

The Grand Canyon is open or maybe is opened for visitors?

Which of the above is correct?

Normally I'd incline towards "is opened" as this is passive voice, but oddly I saw "is open" in one of the passages dedicated to TOEFL students, so I'm a bit confused.
