    Cool alarm clock

    Hi,

In the following passage "he woke up late because the alarm clock didn't go off" Why isn't it "go on" instead of "go off"? Don't you say "turn on" to make something work and "turn off" to make something stop working?

    Re: alarm clock

    Alarm is an odd word.

When alarms make a sound (flash their lights, whatever) we say they "go off."

Then, after you are awake, you "turn off" the alarm so it doesn't keep buzzing.

Think of the phrase "go off" as "activate." The alarm went off because it was activated.
