    I think you should say: I have been to Athens.

    I think you should say: I have been to Athens.
    or

    I had 10 day's travel in Athens.

    IMO, either is acceptable. One says that you have been to the location (to Athens); the other says that you have been inside the city limits (in Athens). :wink:
