    brand new

What does brand means in brand new. Is it an adverb or is this phrase an idiom which makes them inseparable?

I only know brand to mean : a maker's name or trademark
And brand new is entirely different/new...

    .
    From the Online Etymology Dictionary:

Brand-new is c.1570 and must have meant "fresh from the fire" (Shakespeare has fire-new).

An alternative derivation is "bran-new" - delicate items were packed into barrels with bran to protect them.
