    languid tree-clumps

Again an excerpt from Edith Wharton's novel Summer. In what way can a clump of trees be languid? Comments please!

At last the train rumbled in, and engulfed the waiting multitude. Harney
swept Charity up on to the first car and they captured a bench for
two, and sat in happy isolation while the train swayed and roared along
through rich fields and languid tree-clumps.

It is a part of the overall mood-- if not of the narrative, then at least of the view out the train window. It is probably summertime, hot and with no breeze. The groups of trees are unmoving and as if subdued by the weather.
