Please read the Usage Note there.

Avoid using author or co-author as a verb where write or co-write will serve.
    -- Oxford Style Manual
Author; co-author: Use both words as nouns only, not as verbs.
-- The New York Times Manual of Style and Usage

Dictionaries are only descriptive, not prescriptive.

I think in this example ¨write¨ is not applicable.

I´ve read that ¨Jesus is the author of salvation.¨

Couldn´t it be the same as ¨Jesus authored salvation¨?
