    What does Lady Attendants mean in the following excerpt:


    Charity looked up and saw on the corner a brick house with
    a conspicuous black and gold sign across its front. "Dr. Merkle; Private
    Consultations at all hours. Lady Attendants," ...


    Is Lady Attendants referring to the patients or to the people taking care of the patients?

    I don't know the social and historical background of this piece, but I imagine they were people who would just be present at a medical examination to guarantee the chastity of the proceedings!
