    It means making assumptions about what they say or do based on the most favorable interpretation, not the least favorable.

    If I see you at work and your lipstick is all smudged as you come out of the supply closet, if I give you the benefit of the doubt, I'll assume you put it on without a mirror, instead of assuming you were in there snogging with the cute guy in accounts receivable.
