    In or On Figure

    Hi!

My question is following: What is the correct way of saying: I see a line in figure 9 or on figure 9 ?

    Thank you for your help.

Your question is a little unclear to me, are you referring to a mathematical figure or a diagram in a textbook of some kind?

If that is the case I believe you should say--

"I see a line in figure nine."

    Re: In or On Figure

If the line is part of the figure, then I would also use 'in'. However, if someone had added a line to the figure, then I would use 'on'.

    Re: In or On Figure

... and a smudge on Figure 1 would be 'on', but a smudge in the paint [made before the paint dried] would be 'in'.
