    about "may"

    Could you explain why can " may " use in those sentense?

    "Whatever we (may) wish to think, we are creatures of Earth;
    our life is part of the life of Earth."

    "I'll do whatever (may) be necessary. "

    This is modal 'may' being used to describe possibility.

    1) If we want to think and whatever we want to think about things that are in opposition to what's best for the Earth and there are many possibilities, ...

    2) I'll do whatever is necessary if, indeed, there are some things that have to be done.
