    Substitutes for Said. Replied etc

Often when relating a story or joke (where two or three persons are responding to a question) I find a need to substitute words for 'he said'/' she said' with words that are not redundant ' Example: he replied
she shot back... The officer remarked etc etc. Would anyone care to add to this list.

Also "agreed"; [I don't think I've ever heard "disagreed" in this role:

"Does this suit me?" asked Mary.
    "Certainly," agreed John.

    But not:
"Does this suit me?" asked Mary.
    "No," disagreed John. ]

Also "repeated", "reiterated", "answered'. Depending on tone or pitch of voice - "boomed", "shouted", "growled", "piped", "whispered". "Ventured". There's also the rather dated "opined". If there is more than one speaker, you can even used "chorused'.
