    Default How to use "whom"

First of all, I would like to thank Lucyarliwu, Tdol & ROnBee that they taught me in my previous question.

The coming question is : How to use "Whom"
Ex : We want to thank the Emmy voters and our fellow executive producers - Scott, Shane and our amazing writers, without "whom" we would not be standing up here tonight.

Another question is : Can I use " them" instead of "whom"?

    Thank you for your help.

    you are welcome, maktau!

in your sentence i noticed that the whole line was made for a public speech to thanks someones who have made some key help!

i think " whom" can be replaced by "them" in this line, but its better to use "whom" to stress and express the speaker's gratutide towards those helpful persons strongly and noticebaly, which ll make a special effect in speech!

    lucy :)

Choosing Who or Whom with Confidence is as Easy as 1, 2, 3

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Example: Intelligent citizens will vote for whoever they think is best qualified.

Here are the three simple steps:

Step 1. Consider only the words that follow who or whom. With our example, we'd be left with:

    they think is best qualified.

Step 2. Plug the gap with either he or him, whichever one makes sense, and we get:

they think he is best qualified.

Step 3. Now use a simple substitution:

    s/he = who
    Him/her = whom

I am sure that prescriptivists will disagree (read: MNY), but I would not criticize the use of whoever in that sentence despite the presence of the preposition. It just seems to me like an outdated usage. Indeed, I would probably myself say "whoever" there.

You could use them, but you'd need toalter the punctuation:

Ex : We want to thank the Emmy voters and our fellow executive producers - Scott, Shane and our amazing writers. Without them we would not be standing up here tonight.
