What do you call the road which is not a highway?
Highways are main roads and usually wide, almost all cars drive in it, how about those small roads, what do you call them?
In the UK, there are M roads (motorways) A roads and B roads. Anything smaller than a B road is referred to on maps as 'unclassified'. A residential road that is not maintained by the local council is called 'unadopted'. A road no longer (or never) used by powered vehicles is a "green lane".
There's an old word, "byway", that is no longer used on its own, but is fossilized in the phrase 'highways and byways' [=all roads, big or small].
There's a Scottish song with the chorus
- and this song is widely known outside Scotland. So if you said 'low road' you'd probably be understood.Ye'll tak the high road
And I'll tak the low road
And I'll be in Scotland afore ye
I think thatīs all it, thanks Albertino/BobK.
