    You are beautiful

    Hi there.

Please help me understand the song.

" Yes, she caught my eye,
    As we walked on by."

    1. Do "as we walked on by" and "as we walked by" mean the same?

    " You're beautiful. You're beautiful.
    You're beautiful, it's true.
There must be an angel with a smile on her face,
When she thought up that I should be with you.
But it's time to face the truth,
I will never be with you. "

    2. What does 'she' refer to as in "when she thought up that ...."?

    3. What does 'think up' mean?

    4. What does 'you' refer to as in "I will never be with you"?

    Thanks,

    ____________________ the song
    My life is brilliant.

    My life is brilliant
    My love is pure.
    I saw an angel.
    Of that I'm sure.
She smiled at me on the subway.
    She was with another man.
But I won't lose no sleep on that,
    'Cause I've got a plan.

    You're beautiful. You're beautiful.
    You're beautiful, it's true.
I saw your face in a crowded place,
And I don't know what to do,
'Cause I'll never be with you.

    Yes, she caught my eye,
    As we walked on by.
She could see from my face that I was,
    -- high,
And I don't think that I'll see her again,
But we shared a moment that will last 'till the end.

    You're beautiful. You're beautiful.
    You're beautiful, it's true.
I saw your face in a crowded place,
And I don't know what to do,
'Cause I'll never be with you.

La la la la la la la la la

    You're beautiful. You're beautiful.
    You're beautiful, it's true.
There must be an angel with a smile on her face,
When she thought up that I should be with you.
But it's time to face the truth,
I will never be with you.

    Re: You are beautiful

I absolutely adore this song! (I'm listening to it right now, and I have it on replay on my ipod.)

Walk by and walk on by mean to pass someone or something. The second one means, not to stop or walk back towards.

    Re: You are beautiful

    Hi, Soup.

Earlier in the song the writer wrote:
    "I saw an angel.
    Of that I'm sure.
She smiled at me on the subway.
    She was with another man."

The writer referred "angel" and "she" to the girl he met on the subway.

    But, later on:

" There must be an angel with a smile on her face,
When she thought up that I should be with you.
But it's time to face the truth,
I will never be with you."

She (angel) and you (the girl he met) are different entities.

    It's quite confusing. Isn't it?

Does "my life is brilliant" mean 'my life is smart', 'my life is great' or 'my life is cool'?

    Thank you in advance.

    Re: You are beautiful

The girl on the train, with the other man, is just a girl; she's human, not an angel, but she is as beautiful as an angel describes the singer:
    I saw an angel.

    Of that I'm sure.

She smiled at me on the subway.

    She was with another man.

Below, the singer is referring to a real angel, one that planned for the singer to see the beautiful girl on the train. The real angel is described as a matchmaker:
There must be an angel with a smile on her face,

When she thought up that I should be with you.

But it's time to face the truth,

I will never be with you.
Re: Does "my life is brilliant" mean 'my life is smart', 'my life is great' or 'my life is cool'?

There are several meanings, actually; wonderful, splendid, magnificent; vivid. I like the last one, vivid, because the singer talks about being "high"; the girl's beauty alters his perception, puts things into a clearer perspective. But that's just my interpretation, one interpretation among many. I am sure you have your own.
