    Default father's

In the following sentence, should it have been "...father's telling me..."?

"Within five minutes of Father telling me that I should have to leave school I was wondering about the new suit I should wear to go to work in."

No. There is no need for a possessive. It is a person [Father] telling another person [me] something.

But I remember the rule that the possessives must be used with -ing forms, especially when these come after a verb or preposition.

In your original context it is not a possessive.

Father's [telling me to work hard at school] was what helped me get good marks.

    Here it is a possessive.

Thanks . My knee-jerk reaction was that you were wrong, but your second answer has persuaded me.
