    You keep things to yourself, you do not let other people know what you plan or what you are thinking.

    "We do not know what Donald is going to do about the contract. He is playing it close to his chest."

    The idiom comes from playing cards: He plays his cards close to his chest >> he keeps his cards close to his chest so that no one can see what he has.
