Re: meaning of a french word

"bete noir" is literally the "black animal"
In English we would say the "black sheep of the family" meaning the family member who was a problem or not liked or did something wrong.

But the black sheep of a family isn't always a bęte noire (an object of extreme dislike) - bĂŞte noire: Definition, Synonyms and Much More from Answers.com. Some members of the family may quite like him or her.

PS A bęte noire doesn't even have to be an animal of any kind. Example: 'I don't much like physics or chemistry. History is my real bęte noire though - I really hate it.'

If I may add something to this zoologic conversation ( the subject is zoologic !) bęte noire can be defined as Bob did it that is something ( a field)you hate or dread .
