A broken quotation is where only a part of a quotation is cited or is paraphrased:

Who said plenty would bring a country to its knees?

A strange species we are. We can stand anything God and nature can throw at us save only plenty. If I wanted to destroy a nation, I would give it too much, and I would have it on its knees, miserable, greedy, sick. [Steinbeck]

A closed quotation >> "This is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it."

And what if the quotation is complete, but interrupted?

'The man who is tired of London,' as Dr Johnson said, 'is tired of life.'

Sorry - can't answer that. My brain has gone into stasis with these kind of semantic questions
