    Smile the signature pink cat

The film's name originally referred to a stolen diamond. However, it wasn't long before the signature pink cat that slunk across the screen in the opening credits came to be known as the Pink Panther.

How do you paraphrase the phrase in bold, especially the word signature? Thanks.

Do you understand what they are talking about? I don't think you could make this any shorter and keep the meaning...other than use the term "Pink Panther"

    Thanks, Naamplao, for your consideration.

In our language, we call it "the trademark/logo pink cat," but does it sound right and make sense to you?

    Re: the signature pink cat

You could also say "the iconic pink cat."

    "Signature" is the best word.

When a singer is associated with a "signature" song, it means that when you hear this song...no matter who sings it...you will think of this person.

For example, the late Bob Hope had a signature song "Thanks for the Memory". Whenever he appeared in public, this tune preceded him.

The pink cat is the signature of the Pink Panther. There is no other pink cat in the entertainment industry.

"Signature" may be the best choice, but it's not the only one. You can use words like "trademark," "icon," "emblem", "spokesperson" or in this specific case, "spokescat" (if you wanted to be clever you could indicate [mute] spokescat, since the Pink Panther never speaks).

    Ex:
"Thanks for the Memories" was Bob Hope's trademark song.
Tony the Tiger, the spokescat for Frosted Flakes, turns 50 years old this year.
Linus from the Peanuts comic strip is rarely seen without his iconic blanket.
