    Default phrase placement

    What once might have been as a contradiction of values has been turned by the party into one of its core strengths.

    or

    What once might have been as a contradiction of values has been turned into one of its core strengths by the party.

    Where should the phrase 'by the party' be placed and why?

    It is acceptable in both sentences, though the first one is rather smoother than the second. Logically it makes little difference which placing is used.
