I'm getting a little hefty around the middle. = adding some fat in my stomach area

A: Where should I put the flowers?

B: Somewhere around the middle of the table. = not exactly in the middle of the table but close to that position.

Is this the kind of help you're looking for, Hazie?

These two are probably (I'd guess) the most common uses. I'd suggest another one (which might be seen as a variation of B):

'Pop music came to prominence about the middle of the twentieth century.'
