    "He even suggested that I should play cricket with his sons, who were of about the same age as myself."

    What about "...the same age as I"?

    I`d say : "...who were about the same age as me.

    The best way I can formulate this sentence is: "...the same age as I was" as a parallel structure with: "She is taller than I am", rather than "She is taller than I" or "She is taller than me".

    She is taller than me and she is taller than I am are both correct.

    "...the same age as I was." - is correct too.
