- For Teachers
When a teacher says to a student " Do not speak to me in this tone "What does it mean?Could this sentence be made better.
By placing the stress on different words in a sentence a different meaning is created.
Suppose a teacher said this to a student
"Johnny I want you to finish your homework"
If the student responded
" I'm not going to finish my homework" The emphasis of the word "not" gives a tone of defiance to the sentence. So the teacher might respond
" Do not speak to me in this tone. You will finish your homework or I shall have to talk to your parents about your attitude. "
