    dear sir, explain please, 1.[ symbolically ] important. 2. stamp one's authority on sb . 3. to make [ conscious ] effort . 4. swing both ways . 5. what does the future [ hold for ] us.

    1 The importance is a perceived one, like a gesture, rather than important in practical terms. For instance, when a government apologises, it may not change much, but it could be seen as an important gesture
    2 Force/make people accept your authority
    3 make a conscious effort- do it deliberately
    4 be bisexual

    PS, if you could give the sentence where you saw the terms, it could help as meaning often changes in context.
