    Question comma before "but"

    I really need your help.
In an exercise today we had to fill in words such as "however", "but", "although", "despite", "even though",....

    There was the sentence:
I enjoy playing golf,________ I'm not very good at it.

I've been learning English for nearly nine years now and I know that there's more than one answer possible.

Nearly everyone from my class had "but" filled in the gap and our teacher said "but" wouldn't be correct, because you can never have a comma before "but".
I know the comma can be left out sometimes. But why can't "but" be used this time????
Could you give me some examples of using but with/without comma.
    TIA

    Re: comma before "but"

You can put a comma before 'but' when it is followed by an independent clause, which is the case here; I think 'but' is fine.
