Default as if it were yesterday, as if it had been yesterday

    OALD 6th edition, yesterday:
I can remember our wedding as if it were yesterday.

Can we say "I can remember our wedding as if it had been yesterday"?

PS: One of China's college entrance examination questions:
I can remember the incident as if it _____ yesterday. (The answer is "happened", not "had happened".) This leads to my question here.

Yes, both are correct, but you will notice that the first flows off the tongue much more easily!

"As if" introduces a conditional clause, so strictly speaking, it should be "had happened", and in conversational speech, people drop the "had" and just say. "as if it happened yesterday".
