    a word or part of a word usually containing a vowel sound


    examples :
    1. syllable - has three syllables /syl-la-ble/
    2. vowel - has 2 syllables /vow-el/
    3. name - has only 1 /name/
    4. introduction - has 4 syllables /in-tro-duc-tion/
