    Smile tar/pitch

For many decades, tar/pitch was used to on roads, roofs, and boats.

I doubt if tar and pitch both fit in the above and mean about the same. Thanks.

Tar is an inflammable waterproof substance obtained from wood or coal by distillation; Pitch is a refined form of tar. There is no difference in the use of the terms.
