Default pronounciation of the indefinite article A

I have heard the indefinite article A pronounced in two ways: Sometimes it is pronounced like the a in accomplishment (uh) and sometimes have also heard it being pronounced like the letter a (ay). This last one, I have usually heard in a more formal setting. Which way should it really be pronounced?
