Default What is the original meaning of explode!

    Hello Everyone,

Just now I looked up the explode in Webster online dictionary. And have found that "explode" derive from latin language.

    Part of the definition says"
Etymology: Latin explodere to drive off the stage by clapping, from ex- + plaudere to clap "
My question here is what the underscore mean here, esp drive off the stage by clapping .

    Best Regards

    Sky

It means that at the end of a performance, the audience clapped as the performers left the stage. In Roman days, clapping your hands was not necessarily a sign of approval or appreciation, but could be used to show extreme dislike of a performance.

    Dear Anglica,

Thank you very much for your kind reply!
That's the problem, I think. "Drive off" means make something terrible leave, like drive off evil, therefore I was confused why "drive off the stage" is used here. Now I got it! Thank you!

I have another question here! Do most of the English vocabulary originate from Latin Language? And does French also originate from Latin?

    Best Regards

    A big big topic.

English derives from many sources including Latin - particularly North European languages that came in with Germanic invaders, and yes, French also has Latin origins.
