Smile she was so helpful planning the party for us.

We should buy Danielle a gift because she was so helpful in planning the party for us.

Is "in" a proper prep. in the above context? Thanks.

The preposition ‘in’ is fine in this sentence.

    Thanks, Buddhaheart.
By the way, is "in" optional in the base sentence?

‘In’ optional? Hell, no. It’s required to connect the adjective ‘helpful’ to the noun phrase ‘planning …’

    Thanks, Buddhaheart.
But it's omitted in the origina, and I think it's odd. So I posted it here with "in" to ask for your opinion.
