    Cool finfish = fish?

    Hi,

Can I use "finfish" (or fin fish ) instead of "fish"? Is there a difference?

What is finfish? Where have you seen that?
You aren't confusing 'fish' with 'finish' or Finnish' are you?

It's a technical term - not one you will hear daily. I expect a fishmonger will know what you mean but I wouldn't expect everyone to know it.

In what context do you want to use it?

Tracked down some information on it. It is a term used to distinguish true fish (having fins) from shellfish, crayfish, prawns etc.

The man in the street would regard 'fish' as referring specifically to 'finfish', and seafood would refer to all edible marine life - fish, prawns, scallops and the rest.
It would seem that the term 'finfish' is used when discussing farming of fish - aquaculture - to specify fish with fins, as opposed to oyster farming, farming crabs etc.
So unless you are talking about this technical aspect, just use the word 'fish'.

No, it's something I overheard. But your second explanation was very helpful. Thank you.
