improve tremendously to taste that good

    Hello everyone
I'd like to ask about the meaning of the phrase "improve tremendously to taste that good" in the following passage:

He decided to take some of the drink. It smelled like lighter fluid, and a quick sip indicated that it would have to improve tremendously to taste that good.

Does the phrase "it would have to improve tremendously to taste that good" imply that the taste was very bad and after improvement it can only be compared with lighter fluid?

Yes. This drink smelled like lighter fluid and tasted even worse; in fact, it tasted so bad that it would have to improve tremendously just to taste as "good" as lighter fluid (which of course doesn't taste good at all).
