    Default make out/figure out/understand

Just as I was trying to make out what he was talking about, another man took away my microphone as if I had stolen it from him.

    Hi,
Can I replace "make out" in the above with "figure out/understand" without making a change in meaning? Thanks.

In this sentence you can change the words without changing the meaning. However, that may not be true to other sentences using the same words......
